Should we act surprised at this news on ScienceDaily?
Of course the shape of a machine, especially a highly sophisticated one, is critical to how it operates. In this case the machine alters its shape constantly. It obviously would not be doing that without good reason.
It is a lot smarter than the guys peering down the microscope at it.

CELLULAR PROCESSING-POWER - MORE PROOF
This report in ScienceDaily again confirms, albeit only for neurons, that each cell has tremendous processing power.
But it is not only for neurons. All cells are powerful processors. Together they are a processing unit of staggering processing power, handling not only day-to-day functions and development but all the development of functionality over vast period of time and from generation to generation.
And this articlearticle about the handing on of newly-created diabetes underlines the point too, especially in combination with this one, except that this is what we do to ourselves and can do across the generations when we force the processing to go awry with stupid behaviour--when we override our body's processing with bad processing in our heads: in this case with chronic gluttony.
